Greenwaste Curbside Pickup and Haul Away Program

(Truckee Fire's free defensible space program has moved away from chipping services and is using this program in 2023)

Truckee Fire Protection District Greenwaste Pick-Up

With funding from Measure T, Truckee Fire Protection District will support your defensible space work by offering disposal options for woody defensible space vegetation. This service is
FREE of charge, available from May to October. The final deadline to make a request is September 30, 2023. Crews will be working through October to service all requests received.

Truckee Fire is only offering curbside pick-up and haul away service this season (2023).

Homeowners that want the woodchips left behind may still request free chipping service that will be offered through another program managed by the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County

The Greenwaste Curbside Pick-Up Program offered through Truckee Fire is open for the 2023 season. You must have your pile ready BEFORE making a reservation. Funds are limited so have your piles ready as soon as the snow melts. Click the link above to understand how the program will work. You must have your piles ready before you can sign-up.

Serene Lakes Community

Thank you for creating and maintaining defensible space. Stack your piles-every pile counts! Creating and maintaining defensible space is a community sport. We are only as safe as our weakest link.

We encourage you to create and maintain defensible space on your Serene Lakes property. Having piles of tree limbs, dead or unhealthy trees around the community provides fuel for a fire. We ask all homeowners to complete their defensible space work early

Contact one of the Tree Services to have your pile removed if curbside pickup and haul away or chipping has not been done by the end of August; you are responsible for having the pile removed from your property.

Here is what you need to know and do

  • Assess the work that needs to be done on your property.  If it is extensive or does not meet specific program requirements, contact a tree service (see our partners below.)

  • Schedule & Complete your work - Whether you are hiring a tree service or intend to participate in the Truckee Greenwaste Pickup and Haul Away Program or the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County Chipping Program, doing the work early in the season will be beneficial to our community in creating/maintaining defensible space and space will fill up quickly. If your defensible space work doesn't qualify for the curbside pickup or the free chipping program, then the tree services you hire must also chip and spread or remove your cuttings.

  • Signup for Greenwaste Pickup and Haul Away services --Before registering your pile for chipping review the qualifications (refer to the column to the right.)

Here are some things you will need to know about Truckee Fire's Greenwaste Program this year

  • How many piles can there be
Multiple piles are acceptable. Use the Notes box in the reservation to notify the crew with the number & location of piles. All piles must be neatly stacked and located curbside.

  • Timing
Your Pile must be ready at the time of Registration!

Reservations are on a first-come-first-served basis. The goal is to service all requests within 2 weeks but depending on demand, you may be placed on a waiting list and serviced as soon as possible.

The actual service route is determined based on requests in that area, capacity in the truck, and other considerations. Please understand that we are unable to honor specific requests for a day of the week pickup.
